You only have one ride through life so make the most of it and enjoy the ride.

WPJA Top Tens Q4 2007

The Wedding Photojournalist Association sponsors an international photo competition fours times a year that is judged by some of the best photojournalist and photo editors in the business. I have placed four times this year in several different categories. This quarter, two in the top ten rankings. Jane and I are proud just to be in the organization because it holds the highest standards for photographers who document the moments of a wedding in a candid and unobtrusive style. Wedding photojournalism is the core of what we strive to do. Storytelling that is uniquely photographic.

Category: Food and Drink. We had so much fun! They are both students at Berklee College of Music. Marc has written a beautiful story that he hasn't completely put to music yet. Here is one of his songs from the story that he has recorded. It is called Amsel and Josephine. Besides writing the music and lyrics,Marc sings and plays guitar. Sophie is singing harmony with him. We think they sound so soulful together. One of my photographs placed in their recent Winter 2006 Contest.

Judges Comments: A great little moment that uses each part of the frame extremely well. Each of the subjects contribute something that works towards the success of the photograph—the bride’s expression, the woman at center with her expression and the cupping of her hands and the drink and gesture of the woman at right. Nice moment.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_5JNJBP_tnWA/RhUd20IvauI/AAAAAAAAAJQ/P8fNe3I7WBA/s400/0895DSC_0566.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5049975384711326434" />

April is National Poetry Month

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_5JNJBP_tnWA/Rg0o_kAW4KI/AAAAAAAAAJI/p6Bna3aQqJA/s400/apan1b.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5047735829814239394" />

COMPOSED UPON WESTMINSTER BRIDGE, SEPT. 3, 1802
by William Wordsworth

EARTH has not anything to show more fair:
Dull would he be of soul who could pass by
A sight so touching in its majesty:
This City now doth, like a garment, wear
The beauty of the morning; silent, bare,
Ships, towers, domes, theatres, and temples lie
Open unto the fields, and to the sky;
All bright and glittering in the smokeless air.
Never did sun more beautifully steep
In his first splendour, valley, rock, or hill;
Ne'er saw I, never felt, a calm so deep!
The river glideth at his own sweet will:
Dear God! the very houses seem asleep;
And all that mighty heart is lying still!

One of my favorite poems is “Composed Upon Westminster Bridge” by William Wordsworth. I like it because I am photographer and the poem to me is like a great photograph. A moment captured that flows into your imagination like a river. Once read or “seen” it colors your world forever. I read the poem in college. I have never seen a sunrise since that didn’t evoke the heartbeat rhythm of this sonnet. This photo that I took here in Newburyport is one of those moments for me.

John

Mabel's hairdo

Okay, I know I posted some photos of Mabel and Abraham yesterday, but I just couldn't resist these two, I mean come on, is her hair just too adorable or what? David is one of Australia's (and the world's) great fine art wedding and portrait photographers. David Williams inspires through his great love and knowledge of art and his absolutely irreverent humor. One of his favorite painters is John Singer Sargent. We are very fortunate in the Boston area to have access to so many of Sargent's paintings. I am particular fortunate to know a contemporary artist, Dennis Perrin, who lives and works in Maine, not too far from where we live in Newburyport. Dennis Perrin's work is exquisitely luminous and reminiscent of Sargent and the other great Bostonian painters of that era. Inspired by David Williams and my friend Dennis Perrin, I have begun a personal journey to learn as much about light from fine art painting as possible. These are the first photographs of a documentary project I am doing on the work of my friend, Dennis Perrin.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_5JNJBP_tnWA/Rf6zgBzM4kI/AAAAAAAAAFg/QgMxl7pBz0U/s400/a_DSC0041.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5043665995521909314" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_5JNJBP_tnWA/Rf6zLRzM4jI/AAAAAAAAAFY/p-QwSZos8Q8/s400/DSC_1497a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5043665639039623730" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_5JNJBP_tnWA/Rf6yARzM4iI/AAAAAAAAAFQ/PfvPK-f5SHQ/s400/DSC_1392.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5043664350549434914" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_5JNJBP_tnWA/Rf6xjBzM4hI/AAAAAAAAAFI/jkIXoGQ8F4o/s400/DSC_1500.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5043663848038261266" />

Color Me Gone

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_5JNJBP_tnWA/RgMCdGMee6I/AAAAAAAAAGI/C8PBn9DZhq0/s400/JSC_2828a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5044878706487491490" />
John and I were recently looking through the wonderful, bold, and definitely colorful collection of photographs by the Magnum Photographer Constantine Manos. Click on this link to hear him talk about his great photos: Magnum In Motion, American Color

I had taken a seminar with him about a year ago and boy was it inspiring and challenging. Anyways the weather was so beautiful and the light so interesting we decided to take a quick trip over to Salisbury to see if we could find some of the amazing locations and colors that he captured in a few of his photos.

Well, wow, is Salisbury beach ever changing! All sorts of spiffy new condos, mixed in with the now peeling paint and abandoned arcades.

Here are some of the photos we captured, and we are so glad we got a chance to catch just a little bit of what is left of this unique
(at least to this area) seaside amusement center because it seems like it may all be gone very soon. It sure holds lots of memories for me. When Colette was in fifth grade, a very fine photographer named Wendy Ewald came to her school and did a project connecting photographs, words, and self-image. Colette took this photo and wrote this about her hands. Wendy Ewald published these photos and words in a book called “The Best Part of Me”.
The photos and pictures were originally published in "Double Take", a documentary magazine.

My Hands

I like my hands because
They turn the pages of a book
Slowly and magicially. Reading makes
Me happy. They wipe my eyes
When I am sad. They threaten
The things that make mad.
They pull the covers over my
Head when I am scared.
They feel my forehead when
I am sick. They write
I am writing now. They touch
The precious earth and round.
They dance. They act. They’re
Slender and uniqe. They’re mine—
That’s all, slender and unique.

Colette

Mardi Gras

It’s Mardi Gras, mes amis, mes amis Louisiane, mes amis Bostoniane, laisssez les bon-temps rouler!

I was born in New Orleans on a July day so hot and thick it needs no metaphor.
